Red Wings Game

Growing up, I was not the biggest hockey fan; it wasn't popular around Indian Lake, Ohio. I never found myself sitting down to watch a game. Learning to watch a new sport is not easy, especially when trying to figure out the rules and other details. I attended one hockey game in high school for a BPA trip. We watched the Blue Jackets, but before that, we had to sit through meetings about business topics. When the game finally came around, I watched but didn’t really understand what was happening.

When I came to ONU, one of my friends, who loves hockey and played in high school at Findlay, started introducing me to the sport. Being around him, I began to watch a little more.

This past Thursday, he invited me to go to Detroit to watch the Red Wings play the Devils. Since I had no plans, I agreed. I did skip one class, but the tickets were free, and I couldn’t pass them up. On the way, he mentioned that these tickets were around $400 each because they included a VIP experience with free food and other perks. I was excited because this also meant pretty good seats.

Once we arrived in Detroit and got situated, we headed to the VIP room, which was incredible. The food was amazing, with so many options to choose from. As the game was about to start, we made our way down to our seats, which were about four rows from the rink, right in front of the penalty box. This ended up paying off because there were about four fights, and many players spent time in the box. The game was close, but the Red Wings managed to secure the win, and the crowd went wild.

I ended up sitting next to a couple on their first date; they made out next to me, which was a bit gross, but good for them. I pulled out my phone to watch the football game, and they ended up watching with me, so shout-out to them.

After the game, we made our way back, and now, after going a second time, I enjoy watching hockey and turn it on almost every night. Discovering a new sport is pretty exciting, and my friend, a Philadelphia Flyers fan, encouraged me to hop on the bandwagon. Although they are in a rebuilding year, they look promising for the future.

  1. Sounds like a fun trip! I went to my first hockey game last year and I think they're pretty exciting. No one got into a fight at the game I attended but it was still entertaining. Finding new interests is always great!

  2. This looks super fun! I have never been interested in hockey, it's not even really a thing at all in Medina. Glad you are branching out and enjoying time away from campus! Maybe you will do PR for a hockey team one day!!!
